Almonds

Almond orchards require a Mediterranean climate — long, hot summers (ideal ≥ 30°C/86°F) and mild, wet winters. Almonds need ~300–500 chill hours annually, in soil that is deep, well-drained sandy loam with a pH of 6.0–7.5 ensures optimal root health and nut quality.  Almonds are moderately water-intensive, requiring ~10,000–12,000 cubic meters per hectare per year via drip or micro-sprinkler systems to support kernel development.

The finished product maintains its quality for up to two years if kept in suitable storage conditions (<5°C with <65% relative humidity.  When packed and transported correctly, it is very resilient to humidity or infestation problems which affect other more fragile nuts, making it the stand-out leader among tree nuts.

Unlike many other tree nuts, the major producing countries are also the major exporting countries, with USA (specifically Northern California) producing and exporting more that 75% of world volumes.  It represents a level of dominance unlikely to be challenged for decades to come as it is also expanding its output quicker than any other country bar Australia.

Orders can be placed for pallets (1mt), full trucks (20mt) and container loads (20mt if 40’ or 16mt if 20’), from origin or spot Europe.  Barrow, Lane & Ballard can supply almonds Ex Works, FAS, CFR/CIF or DDP.  Shipping time from California is approximately 35 days to European main ports of destination.  The most common varieties are Nonpareil, Carmel/Monterey, Butte/Padre, Mission.
